The plea was filed by Harshvardhan Singh, who challenged the existing fee structure in private medical colleges and questioned the applicability of the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) criteria in such institutions. Singh argued that annual tuition fees in private medical colleges, which reportedly range from around Rs 18.9 lakh to Rs 25 lakh, are inconsistent with the EWS income ceiling of Rs 8 lakh per annum.
