The number of candidates writing the UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE) Main in Hindi and Maithili and securing recommendations for IAS and IPS posts has shown fluctuations in recent years, according to data presented by the government in the Rajya Sabha.
The data was shared by Minister of State for Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions Jitendra Singh in a written reply to a question raised by MP Sanjay Yadav regarding candidates appearing for the Civil Services Examination in Hindi and other regional languages.
As per the reply, the number of candidates writing the CSE Main in Hindi or Maithili and recommended for IAS and IPS positions has varied across the years.
Hindi/Maithili Medium Candidates Recommended for IAS/IPS
- 2021: 10 candidates
- 2022: 27 candidates
- 2023: 14 candidates
- 2024: 5 candidates
Candidates Writing and Qualifying CSE Main in Hindi and Other Eighth Schedule Languages
The minister also shared data on candidates who wrote the CSE Main in Hindi and other languages listed in the Eighth Schedule and those who qualified:

- Written: 538
- Qualified: 26
2022:
- Written: 587
- Qualified: 71
2023:
- Written: 599
- Qualified: 57
2024:
- Written: 1,133
- Qualified: 50
The government clarified that it does not provide a language-wise breakup for the Preliminary Examination. It stated that the prelims is a medium-neutral test, as the question paper is provided bilingually in English and Hindi, and candidates mark their responses on an OMR sheet.
The figures were shared in response to questions on candidates appearing in Hindi and other regional languages in the Civil Services Examination since 2021.
Candidates from Bihar Recommended in UPSC CSE
The government also provided year-wise data on candidates from Bihar who were recommended in the Civil Services Examination:
- 2021: 54 candidates
- 2022: 63 candidates
- 2023: 82 candidates
- 2024: 72 candidates
