Half the internet cheered, while the other half questioned India’s “marriage system”, after a video was shared online, which showed a woman- Keerthana Menon– allegedly getting her head shaved– solely to avoid getting married off! The clip showed a man shaving her head, while the woman had held a cloth below to collect all the shaved-off strands. Allegedly, the drastic step was a result of her mother wanting to marry her off through an arranged match, leaving the woman with no other option but to change her “looks” to the point that “no arranged match” would agree to take her.
The video immediately went viral, pulling many reactions. Most encouraged the woman to live her life independently, while others commented how the issue of “forced arranged marriage” is a deeper-rooted problem among Indian families.
However, after much virality, the woman later took to her YouTube channel and revealed the “real” reason behind the move. Allegedly, she simply “felt like shaving” her head while she was at her cousin’s house. The woman did not mention anything about her mother wanting to marry her off. Allegedly, she had even casually asked her mother if she should shave off her hair, to which her mother had said ‘yes’.
