Five men arrested near RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire on Sunday, September 27, were released on police bail on Monday as counter-terrorism officers continued their investigation into suspected terrorism offences.
The men were arrested after police responded to reports of suspicious vehicles travelling towards RAF Fairford in the early hours of Sunday. Counter Terrorism Policing later took over the investigation, with officers examining the circumstances surrounding the incident and evidence linked to the vehicles.
The decision to release the suspects on bail does not mean they have been cleared of wrongdoing. Being arrested on suspicion of a terrorism offence does not automatically mean a person must remain in custody until they are charged.
Police had obtained additional time to continue questioning the five men. However, once investigators determined that keeping them in custody was no longer necessary or legally justified, they were released on bail under stringent conditions.
Counter Terrorism Policing said the investigation remains ongoing. Reuters also reported that the five men remain under investigation despite their release from custody.
Why Were The Men Released?
Under UK law, police can continue investigating a suspect after releasing them on bail. Bail allows investigators to keep certain restrictions in place while officers carry out further inquiries, without keeping the person in custody indefinitely.
The release therefore does not represent an end to the case. It also does not amount to a finding that the suspects are innocent or guilty.
Investigators can continue gathering evidence, conducting forensic examinations and questioning witnesses. Depending on what officers establish, further action could follow.
Investigation Continues
Counter-terrorism officers are continuing to examine the vehicles and materials linked to the incident, alongside other evidence gathered during the operation.
Police previously established a 400-metre cordon around the vehicles while Army bomb disposal experts examined them. Around 85 households in the area were also evacuated during the operation.
The investigation is also examining the wider circumstances surrounding the incident, including why the vehicles were travelling towards the RAF base and whether the suspects were acting independently or potentially on behalf of another party.
Authorities have stressed that the investigation remains at an early stage. Any potential connection to a foreign state or organisation remains a line of inquiry rather than an established fact.
For now, the five men remain under investigation while counter-terrorism officers continue to assess the evidence. Their release on bail allows that process to continue while imposing conditions on the suspects outside police custody.
