Sawan’s historic achievement comes less than six months after he broke the long-standing India’s marathon record of 2:12:00 by late Shivnath Singh in 1978. Barwal achieved the landmark on his debut at the NN Marathon Rotterdam, a World Athletics Gold Label Road Race, clocking 2:11:58. Barwal, switched from long-distance running to the marathon after fellow Army personnel and mentor Mohammed Yunus Khan advise and delivered a promising result in that event, finishing 20th. He fell about 150 metres from the finish line, but recovered to break the record.
