Heart disease develops overtime and there are several risk factors that might be involved in the process. Among younger Indians, there are a number of reasons that put the heart at risk. There is physical inactivity, excess weight, obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, smoking and unhealthy dietary patterns as well that present a cocktail of reasons. Family history can also add another important layer of risk. The concern arises when one factor doesnt work in isolation but many of these factors are brought together. “A young person can feel completely fine while having an unfavourable lipid profile, elevated blood pressure or abnormal blood sugar. That is why age alone should not be considered a guarantee of good cardiovascular health,” says Dr. Sharad Tandon, Director, Clinical & Preventive Cardiology, Cardiac Care, Medanta Gurugram.
