On the surface, the numbers look encouraging. Over the past two decades, global health workforce density – which includes a measure of doctors, nurses, midwifery personnel, dentists, and pharmacists relative to population – has grown by 52%, rising from 44.8 per 10,000 people in 2006 to 67.9 in 2025. More than 70 million health and care workers are now employed worldwide.
