Artificial intelligence could create a dangerous new problem for Washington and Beijing if an autonomous system interferes with nuclear command networks or launches a military cyber operation. In such a scenario, either government could have only minutes to determine whether the activity was an accident, a malfunction or a deliberate attack. According to the Japan Times, that risk is now being examined by security experts from both countries involved in a long-running US-China dialogue on AI and national security. Their recommendations call for safeguards designed to prevent autonomous systems from turning technical failures or cyber incidents into military confrontations.
