Most importantly, Afghanistan should not be approached as an ordinary solo-backpacking destination. Current official foreign travel guidance warns of terrorism, kidnapping and detention risks, alongside the restrictions imposed on women. Afghanistan’s landscapes and history may intrigue adventurous travellers, but Arunima’s experience is a reminder that the freedom associated with solo travel cannot be taken for granted everywhere. For women especially, the question is not simply whether travelling alone is possible, but what legal, security and personal risks doing so may carry.
