For a teenager, that can be a powerful thing. Years later, the poem may be forgotten, the Shakespeare passage may disappear from memory, and the marks may no longer matter. But the teacher who first said, “That’s an interesting way of looking at it,” can stay. And perhaps that is why, every Teachers’ Day, English teachers seem to occupy a strangely permanent corner of the memory, somewhere between the person who taught the language and the person who, for a brief period, made growing up feel a little easier.
