Mumbai: An eight-year-old boy was killed after he was allegedly run over by a speeding car driven by a 45-year-old woman who was distracted while speaking on her mobile phone in Mumbai’s Bandra area on Sunday, police said. The woman has been arrested.
The incident took place in the afternoon opposite Jijamata Garden on John Baptist Road when the boy, identified as Ansh Ravindra Gupta, was crossing the road.
According to police, the accused, identified as 45-year-old Megha Rawal, was driving an Innova Crysta at excessive speed when she allegedly knocked the child down while talking on her phone and ran the vehicle over him.
“The driver was driving recklessly at an excessive speed and was distracted while talking on a phone call,” a police official said.
The boy suffered severe injuries in the accident and was rushed to Holy Family Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Police have registered a case against Rawal under Sections 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 281 (rash driving or riding on a public way) and 125 (act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). She has also been booked under Section 184 of the Motor Vehicles Act for dangerous driving.
Further investigation into the incident is underway, police said.
In a separate incident, a 17-year-old girl was critically injured after a portion of the external plaster of a parapet wall on the terrace of a seven-storey building collapsed at MHADA Colony in Govandi East on Sunday evening.
The incident was reported around 6:54 pm on August 30 at Building No. 8B, Natvar Parekh Compound, Shivaji Nagar, Govandi East.
According to the fire brigade, a portion of the external plaster from the parapet wall had collapsed and another section was left hanging precariously from the terrace of the ground-plus-seven-storey building.
