Researchers looked at data from Project M.E.D.I.A., a long-term study that followed children across six waves, from around 2.5 to 7.5 years of age. They focused on what researchers call “media emotion regulation” – essentially, using technology to help children calm down when they are upset. The study examined this alongside executive functions, which are important mental skills that help children control their behaviour, respond to changes, solve problems and manage impulses.
