The following day, July 2, brought payments for two separate groups. Social Security recipients who started claiming benefits before May 1997 got paid, as did roughly 2.5 million people who receive both Social Security and SSI at the same time. Both groups typically get paid on the third of the month, but since July 3 landed on a federal holiday this year, their payments were moved up.
