Putnam, a political scientist at Harvard University, noticed a curious trend. Americans were still bowling in large numbers, but increasingly they were doing so alone rather than as members of leagues. For Putnam, the bowling alley became a symbol of something much larger. People were gradually withdrawing from civic organisations, neighbourhood associations, religious groups, sports clubs and volunteer networks that had once connected communities.
