What is histamine intolerance?

Histamine intolerance occurs when the body cannot efficiently break down histamine, allowing it to accumulate and trigger various symptoms.

One of the biggest claims circulating online is that histamine intolerance causes anxiety, insomnia, racing thoughts, and overthinking. Doctors say the relationship is not yet firmly established, as there is limited scientific evidence linking the two.

These symptoms are non-specific and may result from several other conditions, including anxiety disorders, thyroid disease, hormonal changes, nutritional deficiencies, gastrointestinal disorders, medication side effects, and poor sleep. Most available studies are observational, and researchers still lack large clinical trials proving a direct cause-and-effect relationship.

Should you try a low-histamine diet?

With social media promoting elimination diets, many people are cutting out histamine-rich foods on their own. Experts advise against this approach. If symptoms seem to appear after eating certain foods, experts recommend consulting a healthcare professional before making major dietary changes.

A proper evaluation may include reviewing your medical history, medications, dietary habits, allergies, and possible gastrointestinal conditions before considering histamine intolerance as a diagnosis. Some patients may improve with a medically supervised low-histamine diet, but experts caution that the condition remains controversial and should only be considered after more common causes have been excluded.
