A man was arrested in the Bithoor area of Kanpur on Monday (July 6) after he allegedly attacked a woman with a brick after she rejected his marriage proposal. The incident occurred in broad daylight, alarming residents and prompting a quick response from bystanders. The two were sitting inside a car and were on their way to Brahmavart Ghat in Bithoor on Saturday when the incident happened.
According to police reports, the suspect, who resides in Swaroop Nagar, had lured the woman under false pretenses for an outing. During their conversation, when she turned down his proposal, he allegedly reacted with aggression.
He allegedly picked up a heavy brick from the roadside and struck her multiple times on the head, leaving her severely injured, the eyewitnesses told police.
The locals and bystanders rushed to their car after hearing the woman’s screams. They caught the man and thrashed him brutally before the police arrived. A video capturing the crowd’s intervention has since circulated on social media, highlighting the public’s outrage over the incident.
Bithoor police responded promptly, rescuing the suspect from the mob’s fury and taking him into custody. The injured woman was immediately transported to a nearby hospital, where she is currently receiving medical treatment for her injuries. Following her statement, the police have filed charges against the accused under several sections of the Indian Penal Code, including assault and attempted murder.
In a similar incident, a 21-year-old woman was allegedly murdered by a man who had reportedly been harassing her after she rejected his love proposal in Jadcherla town of Mahabubnagar district, Telangana. According to police, the victim was working as a receptionist at a private school in the town.
Officials said the accused had allegedly been stalking and troubling her for some time in the name of love. Police said the incident took place when she got down from a bus and was walking on the road.
