A few months later, the Central government introduced the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021. Under the new rules, major social media platforms, including WhatsApp, could be asked to identify the ‘first originator of a message in cases involving serious crimes.
