The dispute dates back to the swearing-in ceremony of the newly elected Thiruvananthapuram Corporation council, where several councillors took oath in the names of specific deities, including Sree Padmanabhaswamy, Attukal Amma, Udayannoor Devi and other religious figures. Some councillors were also alleged to have invoked martyrs and ideological symbols while taking the oath.
