The attack took place around 12.30 pm in the Lal Chowk area of Anantnag town. Gunshots were first reported from the Kotwal Gali area, following which security forces rushed to the spot. Head Constable Ashiq Hussain of the 3rd Battalion of the Indian Reserve Police (IRP), who was deployed on Amarnath Yatra duty, was critically injured in the firing. He was shifted to Government Medical College (GMC), Anantnag, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
