Another incident has come forward where a ChatGPT user was engaged with the chatbot and later accused of committing a crime. According to The Guardian, a 17-year-old Massachusetts teenager has been accused of killing his brother and mother. The boy is reportedly being held without bail as police investigate a double-murder case in which prosecutors highlight how his use of ChatGPT is part of the evidence.
Reportedly, Arjun Aravind appeared in Concord District Court on Thursday, where a not-guilty plea was entered on his behalf. He faces two murder charges along with many other charges related to the deaths of his mother, 45-year-old Sudha Venkatesan and his 14-year-old younger brother, Siddharth Aravind.
Teen’s Family Found Dead At Home
As per the report, the investigation started on Tuesday after Arjun’s tutor arrived at the family home for a scheduled appointment but could not contact anyone inside. Arjun’s father contacted the police as he had left for work after speaking with his wife. Siddharth was found dead on the first floor, while his mother was discovered in the basement, the police reportedly said.
According to CBS News, the exact causes of the death has not been confirmed yet Prosecutor Suzanne Wiseman, as cited by the publication, said investigators found evidence of a violent physical struggle and believed blunt force trauma had been used against both victims.
As investigators looked into events before the killings, they reportedly found what officials described as concerning online activity involving Arjun.
Reportedly, Middlesex County District Attorney Marian Ryan said Arjun had used the internet and ChatGPT to explore theoretical ideas and fantasy stories involving the killing of his family.
“The investigation has so far shown that Arjun had recently been demonstrating some concerning behavior, including using the internet and ChatGPT to make searches for theoretical ideas or fantasy stories regarding the killing of his family,” Ryan said during a press conference.
This is not the first case of such scrutiny over whether AI chatbots can influence users who may be considering violence or self-harm has emerged.
Earlier this year, Florida’s top prosecutor launched a criminal investigation into whether OpenAI’s ChatGPT could influence threats of harm against users or other people. The investigation also examined claims involving a gunman accused of carrying out a mass shooting in the state. While AI continues to help users in their daily chores, it may also prove to be fatal in cases like these.
