Even if you hadn’t heard of nonnamaxxing yet, you must be abreast with the Mediterranean blue zones and the stellar reputation they have when it comes to health stats. Specific regions in the Mediterranean basin have been marked as areas where people live exceptionally long, healthy lives, the high number of centenarians being a primary marker for the same – Italy’s Sardinia and Greece’s Ikaria, are on that list. Dig a little on what makes the lot so healthy and happy and the primary principles that come to light, is pretty much exactly what nonnamaxxing professes.
Nonnamaxxing 101: Explained
It all starts with the food. Now if you’re someone who doesn’t really cook, doesn’t mean you’re off the hook. Getting into the food scene of a place is the most intimate way to get in touch with the place’s pace and culture. Try out the hole-in-the-walls and one or two food culture zeitgeists before signing up for a cooking class – or better yet, ask a local to teach you their comfort meal!
As far as fitness is concerned, hitting the gym or the mat is a great habit – but maybe you can break it for a few days and priorotise walking through the city and opting for physical chores that fill your soul, as opposed to your calorie counter markers.
While these are two great point to jump off when embracing nonnamaxxing, it’s important to point out that a digital detox – story and post uploads excluded – is pretty much a non-negotiable. After all, when have you thought ‘nonna’ and imagined her doom scrolling on her phone?

Why You Should Give Nonnamaxxing an Active Shot
…Especially if you’re the kind to plan out your vacations down to the last half-hour! Having an active life where you balance work, health and all your funsies day-in and day-out is commendable in its most authentic sense. That being said, you can’t deny that despite the fulfillment this ever-spinning balance gives you, you tend to feel…overworked. You tell yourself it’s all right, and this is what it takes if you don’t want to be consumed by the FOMO – and that’s probably true; except for when you’ve flown half way across the world and spent your hard-earned savings on a vacation that was supposed to rejuvenate you. You may not be able to quite work in all of this in your daily life, but you owe it to yourself to do so when you take time off.

That’s where the philosophy of nonnamaxxing comes in – an irony truly, given how little you’re ‘expected’ to do as part of a trend with the term ‘maxxing’ in it. But the whole reason this trend is catching on is pegged on the fact that most of our generation is either ploughing through burnout, or severely close to it. So this vacation – nonnamaxx – and take a break for real!
