Most mornings, in a clinic in Hyderabad, a ninety-two-year-old woman rises early, reviews the night’s patient notes and plans the day’s surgeries, exactly as she has done for more than sixty years. She still performs caesareans when they are called for, and she still drives herself to work. By the reckoning of her fellow doctors, she has by now helped bring roughly two lakh babies into the world, a number that has not stopped climbing. Her name is Dr Suri Srimathi, and she is quite possibly one of the longest-serving obstetricians alive anywhere.
