Three men have been killed and four other people injured in a shooting in Detroit, Michigan, police say. The shooting happened at about 07:21 local time on Sunday near Eaton Avenue and Prest Street, on the city’s west side.
Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison said the three people who were killed were men aged 30 and above. The four injured victims – two men and two women – are in their 20s and 30s.
Police said the injuries suffered by the four survivors were not life-threatening. Officers and Michigan State Police troopers remained at the scene several hours after the shooting, while Prest Street was closed.
Chief Bettison said police had received several calls for service at the location and already had an investigation under way there. He said officers had been called to the Prest Street address seven times since the beginning of the year.
Bettison described activities at the location as “dancing-type activities” similar to a strip club. However, police have not said what led to the shooting or whether it was connected to the previous calls.
“Regardless of what was occurring in this particular location, … no one deserves to have their life ended or to be wounded by gun violence,” Bettison said.
Police said they had already received tips about the shooting and were pursuing several leads. “To the community, know that we will identify the individuals that are responsible for this heinous incident this morning, and we will do that in short order,” Bettison said.
Police have not released a description of a suspect and said there was no ongoing threat to the wider public.
Detroit Mayor Mary Sheffield offered condolences to the victims’ families, friends and others affected. “This is definitely a tragedy. It’s heartbreaking and our community should not suffer from this type of violence,” she said.
The investigation remains ongoing.
