The Delhi government on Friday organised an event at Talkatora Stadium to recognise the achievements of persons with disabilities, with Union Minister Virendra Kumar and Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta felicitating 62 individuals, institutions and organisations.
According to a PTI report, the programme was organised under the ‘Seva Sankalp Abhiyan’ and titled ‘Ek Shaam Divyangjan Ke Naam’. As per a statement, assistive devices and essential kits were also distributed among 178 persons with disabilities during the event.
Persons With Disabilities Recognised for Achievements
The event highlighted the achievements of persons with disabilities across several fields, including administration, banking, corporate leadership, sports, education, art, social service and rehabilitation.
Those felicitated included IAS officers, people holding senior positions in companies and banks, Paralympic medal winners and international-level blind cricket players. Organisations and NGOs working for the welfare, rehabilitation and empowerment of persons with disabilities were also recognised for their contributions.
The programme featured achievements in para-sports such as athletics, shooting, badminton, table tennis and archery. It also highlighted accomplishments in art, dance, acting, entrepreneurship, social entrepreneurship, mountaineering, education, inclusion, women empowerment, social service and rehabilitation under the theme ‘Main Saksham Hoon’.
Persons with disabilities also presented performances and awareness programmes on different themes. Students from Asha School participated in the programme as well.
Assistive Devices Distributed to 178 Beneficiaries
The 178 beneficiaries received various assistive devices and support kits, including wheelchairs, walkers, wheelchair-cum-commodes, hearing aids, spectacles, silicone foam cushions, spinal support belts, knee presses and cervical collars, as reported by PTI.
Information on the application process for Unique Disability ID (UDID) cards was also provided to participants at the event.
Ministers Highlight Equal Opportunities
Addressing the gathering, Union Minister Virendra Kumar said recognising the capabilities of persons with disabilities and creating opportunities for their growth was a collective responsibility.
He said persons with disabilities can achieve significant success when provided equal opportunities and the necessary support.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said every person with a disability attending the programme had an inspiring story. She said ‘seva’ should extend beyond providing assistance and include respect, sensitivity, equal opportunities and self-reliance.
Gupta also said Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of an ‘Accessible India’ was taking shape, while noting the role of the courage and determination of persons with disabilities.
Delhi Social Welfare Minister Ravindra Indraj Singh said the programme was intended not only to felicitate achievers but also to highlight that persons with disabilities can succeed across different fields.
He said five IAS officers and several other accomplished persons with disabilities, including Paralympic athletes, attended the event and could inspire others through their achievements.
