Students of Jamia Millia Islamia on Thursday (September 24) staged a demonstration against eviction notices purportedly issued to three women hostellers, seeking their rollback. The university officials, however, termed it a “misrepresentation”, as per a PTI report.
The protest was called by AISA, along with AIRSO, Fraternity Movement, MSF, NSUI, SFI and SIO at the Central Canteen inside Gate Number 7, according to a statement issued by AISA.
The student organisations claimed the notices were issued following concerns raised by women hostellers over the quality of food and basic living conditions.
The All India Students’ Association (AISA) alleged that instead of resolving students’ issues, the university was “targeting” those who expressed concerns about essential amenities, and demanded the withdrawal of the eviction notices.
“If these arbitrary notices are not withdrawn immediately, we will be forced to intensify this struggle across the campus,” the organisation said.
‘Hostellers Allowed to Stay for Two More Months on Sympathetic Grounds’: Officials
A university official, however, referred to the allegations as a case of “misrepresentation”, stating that the notices pertained to the prescribed eligibility requirements and were not an action against agitating students.
The official clarified that the outcome of redressal cases of numerous students was released a couple of days ago. Subsequently, three students were found ineligible to retain hostel accommodation as they had failed to secure the prescribed marks.
“Hostel rooms are given on the basis of merit, as per the hostel manual,” the official said, adding that the students had failed to meet the prescribed 55 per cent criteria.
The official said students can seek redressal and secure the required marks, adding that they had been permitted to stay there for the past two months on “sympathetic grounds”.
The three students continue to remain enrolled at the university, the official said.
