The Delhi government has begun shifting anganwadi centres operating from rented premises to Municipal Corporation Schools. The Chief Minister, Rekha Gupta, said on Thursday that the government will develop those centres in better and permanent buildings in the coming two years.
This announcement was made by the CM while honouring the anganwadi workers and helpers under the ‘Seva Sankalp Abhiyan’ during the 9th National Nutrition Month.
CM Rekha Gupta stated the state has nearly 10,870 anganwadi centres and as per the Delhi government’s Economic Survey 2025-26, there are over 10,750 operational anganwadi centres in the city. Additionally, the workers associated with Palna centres will also be included under the recognition initiative.
Rented Centres to Shift to MCD School Premises
Gupta said the concerns raised by the anganwadi workers about centres functioning from rented premises are being addressed by the government. She added that shifting the centres to MCD school premises would provide children with access to facilities such as toilets, parks and play areas.
Further, the CM said that the government will increase the honorarium of anganwadi workers and improve the working conditions. However, the quantum or timeline of the proposed hike was not specified by the CM.
With the initiative beginning on Thursday, felicitation and appreciation programmes will be organised for the anganwadi workers in every assembly constituency, she said.
Highlighting the role of anganwadi workers, Gupta said that they look after children, reach out to pregnant women, conduct surveys, assist in vaccination drives, prepare data and help ensure government services reach out to the families in need.
She clarified that ‘Seva Sankalp Abhiyan’ was not only about taking government schemes to beneficiaries. The initiative is also about interacting with the grassroots workers, understanding their concerns and accordingly making improvements.
The chief minister stressed that the concerns of the anganwadi workers who have served society for years without seeking recognition were now her responsibility. She also assured the workers that the government would make efforts to improve their working conditions.
