The scale of the findings has raised concerns beyond unnecessary surgery. Earlier reviews identified cases where treatment did not follow best practice, including excessive surgery, outdated approaches and situations in which patients were not offered immediate breast reconstruction. Of 539 cases examined by September 2, 38 involved treatment that was not aligned with best practice, while 32 involved excessive surgery. The trust said 20 of those cases involved unnecessary mastectomies.
