The most commonly asked question in the interview is “Why are you leaving your current job?” and this is where most of the candidates struggle. They get confused about how to frame their answers that will directly reflect their professional goals.
Entrepreneur and content creator Ankur Warikoo, through his recent LinkedIn post, addressed this issue and explained in what way young professionals can present their answers or reasons to influence how interviewers perceive them.
He pointed out that people may have genuine reasons for wanting to leave their current workplace. However, the way they communicate those concerns becomes important in an interview and can affect the impression they make on the interviewer.
How Negative Answers Affect Interview Impressions
According to Warikoo, young professionals often mention issues such as having a biased manager, low salary, or a lack of interest in work when answering the question, ‘why they want to switch jobs.’
To which he says that such responses could lead interviewers to form assumptions about a candidate’s attitude towards teamwork, compensation, or professional challenges. “Not because their reasons are wrong, but because their framing is,” Warikoo wrote.
He emphasised the objective and said that the aim is not to hide the actual reasons behind a job change but to communicate them constructively and professionally.
Turning Workplace Concerns into Growth Opportunities
Warikoo suggested that candidates can reframe their concerns by focusing on what they hope to achieve in their next role.
For instance, instead of criticising a manager, young professionals can focus on explaining that they want to learn from experienced leaders. Similarly, those dissatisfied with their salary can say that their interest lies in finding an organisation that recognises and rewards their efforts.
Through such examples, Warikoo highlighted how an individual’s response can shift the focus from workplace dissatisfaction to future aspirations of the candidate.
Growth Mindset Matters, Says Warikoo
Warikoo concluded his post by emphasising the importance of maintaining a growth-oriented approach while navigating career transitions. “You can never go wrong with a growth mindset!” he wrote.
His message encourages job seekers to approach interview questions with honesty, self-awareness and a focus on professional development. Instead of listing out problems at their previous workplace, young professionals can explain what they have learned from their current roles and what they wish to achieve in the next opportunity.
