Japan's 'Fat-Blocking' Diet Coke Might Put Your Basic Can to Shame: But Does it Really Work?

For anyone drinking a Diet Coke every other day is pretty commonplace modus operandi for many, hearing that there’s a ‘fat-blocking’ version makes these cans and bottles appear even more enticing. We hate to rip the band aid off your grey-and-red dreams but even this ‘Coca-Cola Plus’ version does not actively block enough fat to cause weight loss or cancel out a bad diet. For that matter, even your prebiotic sodas with their innovative flavours and promises of ACV benefits aren’t necessarily cans of ‘magic’. Despite these containing 2 to 9 grams of plant-based fibres and real fruit juice, they still may not be able to drastically change the microbiome of your gut. While these options present themselves as ‘healthier’ option that drinking straight up soda, adding a moment of excitement to your mundane diets – especially if you’ve been trying to work on your health or whittle yourself into shape – depending on them as a daily ‘health’ crutch as opposed to an aware indulgence may do more harm than good in the long term. The marketing gimmicks of the big players are of course, first to blame, but eventually, so are the choices we make.
