The manuscript is linked to Sir John Gage, a prominent Tudor courtier who was appointed by Henry VIII to oversee the dissolution of monasteries across Sussex, Surrey and Kent from 1536. Despite serving the king during this campaign, Gage remained a Catholic throughout the Reformation.
