Why Modern Jane Austen Adaptations Keep Moving Romance Away From The Centre

The celebrated 1995 adaptation, scripted by and starring Emma Thompson, retained that economic pressure. The Dashwood women lose their home because the estate passes to Mr Dashwood’s son from his previous marriage, leaving Elinor and Marianne to pursue love within a society governed by money and status. Strip away Austen’s marriage plots and her novels do not become empty. Money, class, reputation, property and women’s limited room for manoeuvre remain everywhere.
