The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged out as the single largest party in the Rajasthan urban body polls, results of which were declared on Monday. BJP under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma, emerged victorious in 41 per cent of the wards while opposition grabbed 35 per cent municipal pockets. Though counting in some wards was still underway, according to the state election commission results, the BJP had won 4179 wards, the Congress emerged victorious on 3613 wards. One noticeable factor that turned out in the results was the performance of the Independents who restricted a saffron sweep by wining approximately 2250 municipal wards. Given that the BJP edged out Congress, the final vote gap between them remained close at roughly 1%.
