Frances Tiafoe defeated Alex Michelsen 5-7, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, 7-6 in one of the most entertaining matches of the 2026 US Open. It turned out to be a heartbreak for Michelsen, who was on the brink of his maiden Grand Slam semifinal, before pre-tournament favourite Tiafoe turned up and snatched a win from the jaws of defeat. Tiafoe struggled for most of the first three sets, staring at a straight-sets defeat. He was down two sets and 5-4, with Michelsen serving for the match. But the nerves got the better of Michelsen, who hit two double faults and was broken twice to concede the set, allowing Tiafoe a way back into the contest.
