The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) on Sunday (September 6) issued a statement on the building that collapsed in Satya Niketan, saying the property was reportedly constructed in the 1990s. According to the civic body, the collapsed building is P-14 in Satya Niketan and is part of a resettlement colony. The property covers an area of around 55 square yards.
The building had a basement along with floors from the ground level up to the fourth floor, the MCD said.
The civic body also said that there were no records available showing any booking or sealing action against the property. It added that no complaints had been received regarding any work carried out at the building.
The building collapsed on Sunday, leaving five dead and several people feared trapped under the debris. Rescue teams, including the Delhi Fire Service, NDRF and police, were involved in the operation.
The MCD statement comes amid questions over the condition and safety of buildings being used as PG accommodations in the area. Authorities are expected to investigate what led to the collapse and whether any safety violations were involved.
ABVP Members Protest At MCD HQ; Detained
Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) members were detained by Delhi Police on Sunday while protesting outside the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) headquarters over the Satya Niketan PG building collapse. The student organisation demanded the resignation of MCD Commissioner Sanjeev Khirwar, alleging negligence by civic authorities over safety standards in paying guest accommodations across Delhi.
ABVP members entered the MCD premises and staged a dharna, demanding immediate action and accountability. The organisation said the collapse was a serious concern for students who come to Delhi from across the country to study at Delhi University and other educational institutions. Many of them stay in private PGs and rented accommodations due to limited hostel facilities. ABVP said the authorities must ensure regular checks of such buildings for structural safety, fire safety and other mandatory requirements.
