The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) cleared the air over major speculations in Indian cricket regarding Rohit Sharma and VVS Laxman after the Indian cricket governing body held a review meeting on Thursday (September 3) at their headquarters in Mumbai.
The board’s secretuary Devajit Saikia spoke to the media after the culmination of the meeting, which was attended by head coach Gautam Gambhir, Centre of Excellence (CoE) head VVS Laxman as well as Test/ODI captain Sbubman Gill and T20I skipper Shreyas Iyer.
Rohit Sharma To Retire?
Saikia dismissed any suggestion on plans of Rohit being dropped from the ODI squad or the player considering retirement from international cricket.
“He is playing superbly in all matches. What more do you want? In the last match, he scored 130-140 runs. So why is there speculation? I do not want to give fodder to the speculators,” said Saikia while speaking to reporters.
Rohit Sharma’s ODI Future Under Microscope?
Ever since Rohit retired from Test cricket in May 2025, his future in ODI cricket has come under scrutiny with reports of the BCCI and selectors wanting to look past him for the 2027 Cricket World Cup. The Indian cricket legend was also stripped of captaincy in the format last year despite leading the team to the 2025 Champions Trophy title in his last assignment.
In India’s tour of England in July, several reports in the Indian media claimed that Rohit has been told by the selectors that the final game in Lord’s will be his last and he is not in the plans going forward by the selectors. However, Rohit scored a century in the last game with a stunning knock of 138 runs in just 110 balls.
Since then, India has not played an ODI series with the next assignment against the West Indies from September 27. The squad is yet to be picked, and Rohit’s selection will be a key talking point.
