The lawsuit was filed by the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE), along with other plaintiffs. In August 2025, the Stanford Daily, an independent student newspaper, filed a complaint alleging that some of its noncitizen writers had avoided reporting on pro-Palestinian demonstrations because they feared immigration consequences.
