Allen Levi self-published his first novel in 2023, at an age when most people are contemplating retirement rather than a debut. He promoted it himself, with help from his niece, selling copies by hand and by word of mouth. It managed around 175,000 copies that way, which for a self-published book is a quiet triumph and, by the standards of what came next, a rounding error.
