Mumbaikars woke up to limited autorickshaws and taxis running on the streets. Drivers had an August 15 deadline to learn Marathi as the Maharashtra State Transport Department made it mandatory. Today, that is August 24, autorickshaw and taxi drivers went on a three-day strike over the Marathi language compulsion. According to a report, RTO officials have checked 5,211 drivers, including 3,942 in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, since August 20. Out of those inspected in the MMR, 722 were found to have no knowledge of Marathi. They were issued notices.
