Taiwan has rolled out a record breaking defence budget for 2027, proposing NT$1.12 trillion, or about US$35 billion, as pressure from Beijing continues to build. This is the first time Taiwan’s defence spending has ever crossed the NT$1 trillion threshold. The proposed figure comes in at NT$173 billion higher than this year’s budget, an 18.2 percent jump, according to the government budget the cabinet approved on Thursday.
