Within the universe of Insidious, the Further is a spiritual dimension that exists alongside the world of the living. It is a realm that is inhabited by spirits, demons and other supernatural entities. As Elise Rainier describes in the 2010 Insidious, “A world far beyond our own, yet it’s all around us. A place without time as we know it. It’s a dark realm filled with the tortured souls of the dead. A place not meant for the living.” What makes it more interesting is that certain people, particularly those with the ability to astral project, can enter the Further while their physical bodies remain behind. However, traveling into this realm comes with enormous risks, as hostile spirits can follow a person back into the physical world and attempt to possess their body (as shown in the latest film).
