The Indian Badminton Contingent faces a critical day of action to keep themselves in the hunt for medals in the 2026 BWF World Championship (BWF) at the Indira Gandhi Arena in New Delhi on Thursday (August 20) on the fourth day of the tournametn after a disappointing third day where 18-year-old Unnati Hooda was knocked out after a three-set thriller while 2021 bronze medalist Lakhya Sen suffered a shock defeat in the second round.
The competition will move to the fourth day, and all eyes will be on five-time medalist PV Sindhu and World Championship debutant Ayush Shetty, with both players looking in red-hot form and top contenders to stand on the podium in the Women’s and Men’s Singles, respectively.
However, both players face a tough fight against higher-ranked player Sindhu, who is seeded 9th, and the third-seed Wang Zhi Yi, who is from China. Meanwhile, Shetty, who is unseeded, will face 11th seed Alwi Farham, who is from Indonesia.
After getting a bye in the first round and a walkover in the second, star doubles duo Satwik Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty will finally be seen in action in the last Indian match of the day. The 2025 bronze medalist is seeded 5th and will face an unseeded opponent. The sole remaining Indian Women’s and Mixed Doubles pairs will also be in action.
Five Indians are still in medal contention, with one each in all five categories. Each of them will be seen in action in their respetive pre-quarter-finals.
