The proposal targets the “Generally Recognised As Safe”, or GRAS, pathway, under which companies can determine that certain substances are safe for use in food without necessarily submitting a notification to the FDA. The agency said the new approach would improve transparency and strengthen oversight of ingredients entering the US food supply.
