Jan Suraaj Party founder Prashant Kishor has broken his electoral duck, by winning the Bankipur by-election seat in Patna by a comprehensive margin of over 19,000 votes.
In his poll debut, Prashant Kishor has managed to end BJP’s 30-year stronghold on the Bankipur seat. The bypoll took place when Nitin Nabin vacated the seat due to his Rajya Sabha nomination after becoming BJP’s National President. The Bankipur constituency-or formerly known as Patna West- has been held by the BJP since 1995.
Addressing his supporters, he said “the people of Bankipur have won. This election was not about making an MLA. It was an attempt by the people of Bihar to tell the BJP’s central leadership to make a good person the Chief Minister of Bihar,”
In his first direct electoral contest, Kishor has secured a historic win. After the 2025 poll disappointment for his party JSP, where they failed to win even a single seat, this bypoll result opens their electoral account.
The constituency went to a by-election on July 30, which saw a 34.24% voter turnout, seven percentage points lower than the 2025 assembly poll iteration. Kishor was up against BJP candidate Neeraj Kumar SInha and RJD’s Rekha Kumari.
