A viral claim circulating on social media has sparked confusion, with several posts alleging that Instagram will be banned in India from August 25. However, the Government of India has clarified that the claim is false and urged people not to believe or share such misinformation.
The Press Information Bureau’s (PIB) Fact Check unit addressed the viral posts through its official X handle, writing that there is no decision to ban Instagram in India on August 25. The government advised users to rely only on official sources for such information and avoid spreading unverified claims online.

Netizens React To Viral Claim
The rumour quickly spread across social media platforms, with many users expressing concern over the future of the Meta-owned photo and video-sharing app.
Some posts even claimed that users should download or back up their content before the alleged ban date. However, no official notification has been issued by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Meta, or any other government agency announcing such a move.
PIB Debunks Viral Claim
In its fact check, PIB categorically dismissed the viral message as fake and appealed to citizens not to forward or rely on misleading social media posts. The fact-checking agency regularly verifies viral claims related to government policies and public interest issues and has advised people to cross-check information through official government channels before believing or sharing it.
At present, Instagram continues to operate normally across India, and there is no official announcement regarding any nationwide ban from August 25. Users can continue accessing the platform as usual.
