Samsung yesterday launched the Galaxy Z Fold 8, but if you’re planning to spend close to Rs 2 lakh on a smartphone, the obvious question is whether it’s worth upgrading from last year’s Galaxy Z Fold 7. The new model arrives with a redesigned body, a newer Snapdragon chipset, a brighter display and a bigger battery. At the same time, the Fold 7 still holds its ground with a more capable camera setup led by a 200-megapixel primary sensor. The biggest changes this year are under the hood. The South Korean smartphone maker equips the Galaxy Z Fold 8 with the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy, replacing the Snapdragon 8 Elite found in its predecessor. It also ships with Android 17-based One UI 9, while the Fold 7 launched with Android 16 and One UI 8. Battery capacity has also increased from 4400 mAh on the Fold 7 to 4800 mAh on the new model.
Samsung has also trimmed the weight considerably. The Fold 8 weighs 201g, making it 14g lighter than the Fold 7’s 215g. It continues to carry an IP48 rating, Wi-Fi 7 support, Samsung DeX and Ultra Wideband connectivity.
Coming to the display, the Fold 8 gets a 7.6-inch main display capable of reaching 3,000 nits of peak brightness, while the Fold 7 sports a bigger 8-inch panel but tops out at 2,600 nits. The cover display has also shrunk slightly from 6.5 inches to 5.5 inches.

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 swaps the Fold 7’s triple-camera setup for a dual-camera system featuring a 50-megapixel primary sensor and a 50-megapixel ultra-wide camera. While it still supports 8K video recording, it no longer includes a dedicated telephoto lens.
That’s where the Galaxy Z Fold 7 holds an advantage. It houses a 200-megapixel main camera, a 10-megapixel telephoto sensor with 3x optical zoom and a 12-megapixel ultra-wide camera. Storage configurations remain largely unchanged, with both phones available in 256GB, 512GB and 1TB variants, alongside up to 16GB RAM.
Last, coming to the price comparison, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 starts at Rs 1,79,999 for the 12GB + 256GB model, which is Rs 5,000 more than the Galaxy Z Fold 7, launched at Rs 1,74,999 for the same configuration.
