A man’s vacation turned into a nightmare after he realised that he was “possibly” laid off from his company– while he was still “enjoying” his break. Confused? Well, so was the said employee, after he sent an email to his “work mail”. Taking to social media, the man shared the entire matter. Allegedly, the 31-year-old had come up with a project-related idea while on his vacation. As a reminder for later, the man decided to mail the idea to his “work mail”, using his “personal mail”.
However, when he sent the mail, he ended up receiving an “automated response” instead, that read: “This individual is no longer employed by X Company.”
“Laid off during Vacation. Words of advice or any words of encouragement would be greatly appreciated. Hi everyone, I am 31 and am pretty sure I just found out I was laid off. I am on vacation but had a thought regarding something I am/was working on so I sent an email from my personal to my work email. So I would have the reminder when I got back to the office,” the post read.
“I received an automated response which didn’t raise any concerns at first because I had set my OOO. Only after looking at the automated response did I see that it had been edited without my knowledge to state that ‘this individual is no longer employed X Company’ and to contact my manager,” the post continued.
Shocked and confused, the man then recalled a call he had gotten earlier, where his manager had asked him to join a meeting while he was still on vacation; he was not able to at the time. The manager, after the refusal, had simply asked him to “keep enjoying” his vacation. He received no formal update on the matter anymore.
“Earlier in the week, my boss texted me to see if I was able to join a call last minute (not too outside of the norm, small company and we communicate via text fairly consistently even on vacations). I told him I was not able to due to the time difference and lack of consistent Wi-Fi so he told me to just keep enjoying my time off,” the man recalled.
However, the automated response anyways left him with the conclusion that he was possibly laid off while he was still on break.
Turning to the internet, the man then asked about suggestions and solutions.
“Honestly this all comes at a shock to me because I was just promoted back in January and based on all accounts from my peers and the executive leadership I have been doing well. I even had a great lunch with my boss last week and there were no signs. I am supposed to go back into the office and return from my vacation on Tuesday next week and am honestly shocked and confused. Not sure what I should be doing since I am still on vacation. Any advice or words of encouragement would be greatly appreciated,” the post concluded.
The post soon went viral, drawing many reactions. Most internet users called it a “dodged bullet”, stating that the company sounded like a “reg flag” for laying off in such a manner.
