In a major reshuffle, senior IPS officer Anurag Kumar is set to become the new Delhi Police Commissioner, replacing Satish Golcha. A 1994-batch AGMUT cadre IPS officer, Kumar was serving as Special Director in the Intelligence Bureau (IB) before being elevated to the top post in the national capital.
In an official order, the Ministry of Home Affairs said Kumar will assume charge as the Commissioner of Police, with immediate effect and continue in the role until further orders.
Who is Anurag Kumar?
Hailing from Uttar Pradesh, Anurag Kumar is a 1994 batch IPS officer of the AGMUT (Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram and Union Territories) cadre.
Holding a BE degree, Kumar was directly recruited through the UPSC Civil Services Examination, and has accumulated over three decades of service. He is currently on central deputation, serving with the Intelligence Bureau. Over his career, Kumar has been honoured with the Police Medal for Meritorious Service (2010) and the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service (2016), with the latter being one of the highest honours awarded to police officers in India.
He was most recently elevated to the rank of Special Director in the Intelligence Bureau, a post upgraded on an in-situ basis by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet.
His predecessor, Satish Golcha was set to retire in April 2027, but under interesting circumstances, government’s move marks Golcha’s removal from the post of Delhi Police Commissioner prematurely, who assumed office in August last year.
A 1992-batch AGMUT cadre IPS officer, Golcha took over as the Delhi Police Commissioner on August 22, 2025, after serving as the Tihar Jail DG.
