If You've Been Feeling Unusually Drained, Dakshinayana May Be the Reason

If you feel like you’ve fallen prey to lethargy, aches and glum that truly doesn’t feel like yours, know you’re most likely right. Earlier this week, on July 16, the cosmos switched gears, entering its glacial Dakshinayana period. Dakshinayana is the six-month period when the Sun is believed to travel southwards in the sky. In astronomical terms, this spells out the Sun’s descent towards winter. In astrological terms, it marks the occasion of Kark Sankranti. ‘Kark’ here refers to the zodiac sign of Cancer, meaning the Sun’s descent has it moving into the zodiac sign for a bit. This typically takes place in mid-July and this year, occurred on July 16. In religious terms, this six-month descent is called the ‘night time’ of the Gods. The Sun’s southbound trajectory continues right till mid-January of the next year, which is when the brightest star yet again switched gears to now move northbound – a phenomenon celebrated as Makar Sankranti, which sees the Sun move into Capricorn.
