“A sanction of that size has no analog in the history of consumer protection enforcement,” the company stated in its court filing. Meta is set to face the trial in August in Oakland, California, over claims brought by California, Colorado, Kentucky and New Jersey. These US states have accused Zuckerberg’s firm of creating features on Facebook and Instagram that encouraged excessive use among children and teenagers while not being transparent about potential risks.
