A powerful heat wave sweeping across large parts of the United States has forced officials to cancel, postpone or modify dozens of America 250 and Fourth of July celebrations, as temperatures soar above 100 degrees Fahrenheit in several regions.
The extreme weather has disrupted parades, fireworks, concerts and community events just as millions of Americans prepare to celebrate the nation’s 250th Independence Day.
Washington, D.C. Parade Canceled
One of the biggest changes came in Washington, D.C., where organizers canceled America’s Independence Day Parade, citing safety concerns for participants, spectators and staff.
“After extensive and careful consideration, the safety of our participants, spectators and staff remains our top priority,” organizers said in a statement.
Meanwhile, the Great American State Fair on the National Mall temporarily closed Friday afternoon because of dangerous heat before reopening later in the evening. According to reports, emergency crews treated dozens of people for heat-related illnesses, with several requiring advanced medical care.
To help visitors cope with the heat, organizers added free water stations, misting areas, cooling tents and complimentary bottled water throughout the venue.
Philadelphia And Other Cities Scale Back Celebrations
In Philadelphia, officials canceled the Salute to Independence Semiquincentennial Parade, saying the dangerous temperatures made it impossible to safely host the large-scale event.
Several other Philadelphia events were also affected. The All-American Block Party was canceled, while drone shows, picnics and fan festival activities were delayed, shortened or moved indoors.
Outdoor anniversary events at Gettysburg National Military Park were also shifted indoors because of the extreme heat.
Fireworks Canceled Over Wildfire Concerns
The weather has also heightened wildfire risks across parts of the western United States.
At least eight Colorado communities canceled their Fourth of July fireworks displays over fears that fireworks could ignite fast-moving wildfires amid hot, dry conditions.
Dozens Of Local Events Affected
Communities across several states have either canceled or postponed Independence Day celebrations.
Among the affected states are:
- Alabama
- Delaware
- District of Columbia
- New Jersey
- New York
- Pennsylvania
- Virginia
- Colorado
- Maryland
- Massachusetts
Events impacted include Independence Day parades, concerts, fireworks displays, community festivals and America 250 celebrations.
Officials Urge Residents To Stay Safe
Weather forecasters warn that the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic remain under dangerous heat conditions, with heat index values exceeding 100 degrees Fahrenheit in some areas.
Authorities are urging residents attending holiday events to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activity during peak afternoon hours, wear lightweight clothing and make use of cooling stations where available.
While many celebrations are continuing with additional safety measures, organizers say public safety remains the top priority as the historic America 250 festivities continue through the holiday weekend.
